Section is the moniker of writer/producer Danny Belgrad, a 21-year-old studying philosophy at Yale University. He makes hazy, ethereal indie-pop laced with dreamy synths and somber melodies. He also loves 8-bit Nintendo music and is an aspiring time traveler. "I've been writing music on guitar and piano for many years, but never sought out to self-produce music," Belgrad explains. "At a certain point, I became enthralled with the idea of realizing a singular creative vision in music, something that I felt was the defining characteristic of current indie music. To that end, I began producing and mixing music in early January. Radiohead and Wilco have long been my favorite artists, but Grimes and Tame Impala are certainly the most inspiring figures to me, considering that their records are born from individuals who write, produce, and mix their own music. I'm also obsessed with Computer Magic and Porches, but they haven't conquered the world in the same way haha," he continues. "I suppose I call my project indie-rock, but I'd be lying if I said I completely understand the distinction between synth-pop/dream-pop/indie-pop/electro-pop, etc. I guess I could also be any of those also.
For the last few years NO TERRAIN has traveled the world, performing stunt shows. During his travels, he wrote the No Terrain EP. When he returned, his friend and producer, Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett, Dilly Dally, Weaves, Austra, many many more) and him sat down in the studio to put all the pieces together. The EP comes out on the 18th of November.
Garlands is a Dream Pop / Newgaze (Shoegaze) band from Oakland California formed in 2014 by Bay Area musicians, Lisa Light of The Lovemakers (Interscope) and El Elle and Mikael Johnston of Mephisto Odyssey (Warner Bros.) and Dresden & Johnston. Veering left of their collective pop and dance background, Garlands is an exploration of the liminal and subtle elements of sound and melody. Beach House, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star may, Bat for Lashes come to mind upon first taste, but there are many layers within. Two years in the making, the debut album features intricate poetries and plenty of velvet-covered hooks. Swedish mixer Hans Ollson Brookes (I Break Horses) completes the sonic palette with his faraway spacious touch.
As a song, 'Damn' is about the power play between two people. The magnetism, the seduction… It’s about desire and heartbreak, about someone who has a hold on you. Red Rosamond grew up listening to stars like Aretha Franklin, Dinah Washington, Al Green & Tina Turner. Inspired by their work, with every song she writes, she aims to be true.
A combination of retro aesthetics, enduring lyrics and alt-rock grit.
The best music happens when artists refuse to remain stuck in their own comfort zones and creative boxes. Whenever this happens, they are free to give full range to their vision, and they can really come up with something that’s groundbreaking and personable. This is certainly the case here with Tommy Red and his brand new EP release, “I Wanna Be Exploited.”
