Thrills' is about a nostalgia overdose on a hazy afternoon. Lampshades came together in 2015 with the aim of taking the weirdness they admired in ‘80s noise rock and adding their own frenetic energy into the mix. Their recording efforts to date, showcase a ferocious and visceral sound that captures their intense live performances and their thematic preoccupations with the disengagement and disenfranchisement found within the urban landscape. Lampshades follow the path their predecessors carved out as they looked for hope within the dirty and ugly aspects of a paranoid society.
“Hewing Crowns” is the first single from herharbour's sophomore release, and is the oldest song on the album. She chose it as the opening track and first release as she felt it introduced the space from which she started writing Go Gently Into the Night and that it could serve as a preface to the demons she attempted to quell in making the album.
Out on February 3, 2017 with E-Tron Records, 'Go Gently Into the Night' is about cycles. Herharbour wrote the songs at a time where death felt omnipresent. This album has been her attempt at making peace with death as a character of growing importance in her life.
Edited by Mike Dubue, the video is made up of found footage from the 1966 short film “Silent Snow, Secret Snow” by Conrad Aiken. She wrote and produced the album in Ottawa and recorded with Dave Draves at Little Bullhorn Studio.
Separate Grooves (release date Nov. 2) is on the rock end with pretty singing, vintage keys inspired, and 90s -ish sounding distorted guitars (and a couple acoustic thrown in).
Some themes explored on the album besides loss/love (Miss Invisible, Separate Grooves, Working for You) - airline travel (TSA Patdown), the affordable housing crisis (Tenement Cove), and self-funded artists (Wanting In).
Kabaal klankbaan is Gauteng-based musician Floris Groenewald’s folk-rock music project. “It’s not a stage name,” says Floris, “but a band, of which I’m the only permanent member.” They play acoustic, alternative folk-rock, which varies from indie-pop songs, folky dystopian love songs, bluesy rock & roll, to songs about robots and video games.
Most live performances consist of one guy with an acoustic guitar, harmonica, and stompbox, rocking and rolling and folking in an attempt to ignore genre limitations. His next show might be Afrikaans, English, bilingual, folky, rocky, accompanied or solo. In 2015 Kabaal klankbaan performed several times as a duo, joined by saxophinist Andre van Coller, and for a special Halloween show in October 2016, they pulled out all the stops as a four-piece band.
Kabaal klankbaan has released a debut album, Dit wat oorgebly het, in October 2012, closely followed by a standalone, free download single, This town is for lovers, in November 2012. They launched a new single, Player Two (featuring Gad de Combes from Adventure Man and Shortstraw), in October 2013, and a second full-length album, Baptism, in June 2015.
Robot Girlfriend is a fun, humourous, electro/indie-pop song with a fair share of sincerity and heart.
Floris Groenewald, songwriter, frontman, and vocalist, describes the song with his tongue in his cheek: “Robot Girlfriend is simply about how flippin’ sweet it would be to have a girlfriend who’s a robot.”
“But it’s also about when your love life is so completely disappointing that you just retreat into a fantasy world and reject all sense of reality – or so my doctors say.”
The Great Long Distance is an audible recollection of the first 12 months of a long distance relationship, including the highs and lows and moments in between. It is a journal without words, each of the 12 tracks representing each month respectively. Inspired by the format of NIN's "Ghosts I-IV", the album is a sonic tapestry of different moods and themes, with various recurring motifs and the subtle melding of synthesizer and samples; the result something not quite classical, ambient or electronic - rather, an eclectic blend of the three. In order to excel in the independent music industry, an act has to define itself as especially unique with a sound quite unlike anything else in the community. This is a tall order, one that isn’t easily filled by acts entering variations of rock music due to the immense amount of bands flooding the scene right now. Palehorse/Palerider, a “doomgaze” trio from Denver, has released an EP entitled ‘Burial Songs’ that does a surprisingly superb job at separating itself from the pack. Let’s delve into it.
Even though the independent rock scene is quite inundated with new acts, there’s always a welcome place for an outfit that changes the formula enough to be consistently interesting and worth taking notice of. The New York-based alternative rock group Voices from Deep Below attempts to do just that, fusing together a variety of styles into a surprisingly coherent sound. Their new record, “I Want to Stand Where the Sun Himself Shakes with Fear”, is a five song album that navigates alt-rock, experimental, and borderline metal and progressive influences all at the same time.
