Sneakers is a soul-filled collaborative community of musicians and artists from the streets of Auckland, New Zealand. The community is lead by Nick Raven and Chris Dent, who have been writing and recording in living rooms, basements and bedrooms since 2014. As the crew expanded the music took on new shapes. Sean Patterson, Matt Bizzle, Hannah Rolfe, and Dean Rodrigues make up a rich palette of sonic and visual wonder to draw from. Chris and Nick work closely together, with Nick taking a producer's approach and Chris using a hands-on singer/songwriter approach.
The result is a set of slick, emotive and groovy tunes. The project's debut single "Come Around Sundown" was released on October 4th, 2017.
"Come Around Sundown" started off as a funky acoustic number, but after we jammed with the live band it found a new life with disco beats, psychedelic organs, slick guitar and soulful sax," Chris explains. The entire song was recorded in Chris’s inner city Auckland lounge using borrowed gear and an abundance of time. Two years on the band set up at Depot Sound Studios in Auckland with Morgan Allen to sculpt the mix. The song was then sent to Sage Audio in Nashville, where it was mastered by Steve Corrao.
Alyosha, the fourth full-length album from Philadelphia-based guitarist Patkus, released on September 1st.
An hour-long composition comprising six movements with a prologue and epilogue, Alyosha stands somewhere at the intersection of modern classical, post-rock, and American primitive.
“I was reading The Brother’s Karamazov — which is awesome by the way — and wanted to make something of a similar scale and scope. I wanted to aim high, take a leap of faith, pretend to be a better musician than I actually am, and see what would happen.”
From John Fahey to Mogwai, Steve Reich to Ali Akbar Khan, Patkus' music is an idiosyncratic blend of influences and composition techniques.
Lord Kesseli And The Drums is a band comprising of St. Gallen, Switzerland based maverick multi-instrumentalist Dominik Kesseli and drummer and producer Michael Gallusser. Following on from the release of their self-titled debut EP via celebrated Zurich record label Ikarus Records in the summer of 2016, Lord Kesseli and The Drums have just released their new single, Dear John. The track was recorded at Michael?s QLFM Studios in St Gallen.
Lord Kesseli And The Drums create involved soundscapes with drums, guitar, electronic bass synthesizer and pre-produced samples, which explore stories of human manipulation through consumption, and economics, politics and religion. Drawing from as diverse influences as Beethoven, Portishead, Nirvana, Bon Iver and Radiohead, the band?s sonic output has much in common with the international scene of kraut/psyche/cosmic space cadets such as M83, Connan Mockasin and The School of Seven Bells.
In terms of describing new single Dear John, mastermind Dominik Kesseli defines it as singer-songwriter psycho rave. It mixes narrative lyrical song structure with post electronica textures and atmospherics, and explores the existentialistic breakdown of a tortured soul seeking the redemption of St John. The exploration of religious parables in a secularized context is one of the facets of what is so fascinating about Lord Kesselis output. The suitably haunting video was directed by emerging St Gallen video artist Kaliber and it was filmed on location in the underground of St.Gallen, and in Kalibers studio. Ikarus Records label boss Manuel Clausen features as the protagonist.
Their debut EP release in the UK was met with glowing reviews and airplay, including Tom Ravenscroft featuring the track Arnold on 6Music. Live concert film Waiting For Arnold premiered with Loud and Quiet, and went on to win an award at the prestigious industry festival Austin Music Video Festival in 2016. The band has since toured France, the UK and Switzerland and are about to start touring in Germany. They recently went down a storm at Sounds From The Other City Festival in Manchester.

Tuber grew up in a sunny place, south of Greece, on an island called Crete. They were hiding from the sun, jamming in dark studios and playing their music in rock caves. As they moved north, sounds became lighter, since they started to miss the hot ground. The balance came as a result of smash, dark embraced light and improvisation turned into an effortless and instinctive process. Tuber moved their interest into new forms, founding themselves experimenting with compositions that combine mixed styles and sounds from a different ground. A focus is now on rock aesthetic flirting with psychedelic atmosphere and a touch of romantic mood. At this time Tuber live in Serres, forming their feelings and thoughts into music and words, still learning how to leave with reality and reinventing it with love.
Mixtaped Monk is a one man DIY music project by Indian music producer, Arka Sengupta. Started in 2016, Sengupta has released 4 full length albums and various singles under the moniker of Mixtaped Monk. "Northern Eye EP" is his latest release.
Mixtaped Monk's debut album, "Urban Lonesome," is a very personal and emotional album to Arka. Through sounds, it talks about the different experiences a person has and what he feels when he finally comes back home after spending 5 years in various cities following his passion. The album tries to convey how the person feels when he finds out that the city, and the whole atmosphere around it has changed drastically. He feels like he is stranded in a deserted island; friendless, lonely and anxious.
The album is inspired by Arka's own experiences after he shifted to his hometown recently. Sonically, it borders around Atmospheric, Ambient, Post-Rock and Experimental music.
Ali Murray is an ethereal folk songwriter/musician from the cold isle of Lewis in the north of Scotland. He writes dark atmospheric folk music with lush sweeping dreamy soundscapes and Celtic-twinged instrumentation. His new album LAND OF EVERGONE strikes a balance that is intimate and soaring, peaceful and haunting, sad and quietly joyful, delicately reverberating with Murray's dreamy voice and guitar playing.
Orellana is a neo-classical/post-rock collective hailing from Bristol, UK. Their new album “52”, released in late December, brought in the new year with it’s explosive and intricate sound. The project’s music transcends genre definitions in order to focus on a broad, diverse concept that is more emotional than tangible. This particular release is full of rich and diverse arrangements, but it is also a powerful exercise in minimalism, one that showcases the strength of very few notes placed in the right spots. The simplicity of the arrangement is actually one of the strongest aspects of this entire release: there’s a palpable stillness created by the long, drone notes in the background, which almost makes you feel like the world is happening in slow motion. When the chords and notes change, it feels quite monumental due to the beautiful contrast between the stillness of the background textures and the expressive sound of the guitar-based melodies.
