I release "Sonder" at midnight on my one year anniversary in Los Angeles, CA – a year that has been so painfully transformative I'm not sure I can elucidate much greater than this song.
"Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root:
pati. It does not mean to flow with exuberance; it means
to suffer." -Mark Danielewski
I wrote "Sonder" at rock bottom. The mental plight that accompanies the pursuit of passion can be as equally destructive as it is fulfilling.
An individual's purpose (and moreover, turmoil) is as unique as the genetic code from which it is extracted. As I pondered this, a sense of morose engulfed me. I will never fully understand anyone's motives, dreams, desires, reasoning – as they forever exist in a foreign realm.
This notion awoke a sense of self-awareness.
I am only myself. I am the keeper of my fortune. I have the power to respond to doubt, fear, rejection, and failure on my own accord.
So I did. As much as "Sonder" is about agonizing turbulence, its fruition reveals a light in the dark."
London-based hip-hop act Hyphen's new single "Lost" is a brass-laden fusion of soul, electronica, and trip-hop with an exciting, precise flow .
"I wrote this song on late on a Saturday night after reluctantly saying no to go to a mini reunion my school friends were having," the London-based Hyphen explains. "Trying to manage a full time job and music career simultaneously means cutting out on something, and for me that involves being a lot less social and very single."
"While that sounds a bit miserable, I wrote this song on a night alone, pretty happy about the situation. Watching people's Snapchats about their night outs, which were largely the same as any other night out, made me quite pleased that through music I'd found something to do that was pretty different."
Released on 6/30, Hyphen's "Lost" is the latest single to be taken from his upcoming EP ‘Dance Songs To Die To’.
After touring in New York, London and Delhi, Hyphen is now gearing up for the release of his debut EP ‘Dance Songs to Die To’. Featured on international platforms such as Sofar Sounds, ILUVLIVE and Don’t Flop, the highlight of Hyphen’s year was a sold-out headline show in New York.
Without having a single or EP out, Hyphen has managed to garner over 50,000 views across digital platforms, featured on the same sets that the likes of Ed Sheeran and Bastille have played and is now on board with a team who’ve worked with artists like George the Poet, D’Banj and some of the best up and coming UK talent such as Deanne Chase and Hunter.
Ciphurphace – the Arizona-born, New Jersey-based emcee known for his rapid-fire delivery, battle-ready bars & humorous punchlines, releases the fourth single – with accompanying visuals - from his In Phaced God We Trust EP, which was released late last year as a joint venture between Tucson's own Effin Elements Entertainment & NYC-based indie label SpaceLAB Recordings. The self-proclaimed “Asian Pierce Brosnan with a beard problem” comes out the gate swinging with a machine-gun flow that acts as both an ode to his proactive pen game, as well as a cautionary warning to ill-equipped challengers on the microphone....”punchlines pack M. Tyson, M. Bison power.” Produced by SpaceLAB Recordings founder Jake Palumbo, who also provides the cut-&-scratch hook as well as a guest appearance to close out the record, also speaking on his lyrical prowess, but in the snarky & sarcastic sneer that has become a trademark for the Brooklyn-based emcee & producer - “You should pop a couple No Doz / & join F*boys Anonymous, you like your own photos.” Ciphurphace & Jake Palumbo have previously teamed up for the 2013 collaborative LP South By Southwest, under the group name Moonshine Burrito, & have a lengthy history of appearing on one other's projects since meeting on tour in 2007.
LV Baby's music has previously been featured in the show 'Broad City'. For the track "Super Powers" in particular, guitarist Black Bear and LV Baby teamed up with Pell to create the song in a moment of self-realization. "We see a bunch of super heroes on TV, but often fail to recognize the real life super heroes both in our communities and in ourselves," LV Baby explains. "The single moms that balance work, school, motherhood, and every day adult issues. The kid in class who stands up to the bully despite the consequences. The people that decide to do the right thing regardless if it's easy or inconvenient."
"Super Powers" is an honest song for real people who try to make a real difference on a daily basis. Aside from the content, the song is as wavy as they come. The genre-bending hip-hop/indie-rock vibe sets the tone for an amazing new sound.
LV Baby began making music and playing guitar during his high school years in Mississippi. He linked up with Black Bear when he moved to Atlanta. Since then, they created a band and have been lighting the city on fire by turning one gig into 3 or 4 every time.
Fresh off the heels of having his first release of 2017, “Stuck in the Middle”, land on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” and “U.S. Viral 50” playlists, SIDIZEN KING returns with “Roll the Dice”, an electro-funk jam that tackles the age-old challenge of escaping the “friend-zone.” Filled with clever lines like “I’m just tryna find my lane up in your track meet, you complain we all run games, but you stay chasing the athletes” King’s signature metaphor-savvy writing style compliments the smooth chorus and Ryan Spraker’s (Pell, Daye Jack) gliding production.
The latest emerging talent from the music and cultural hive of Los Angeles, SIDIZEN KING arrives at the cross section of electronic music and hip-hop with an experimental, hybrid sound that is quickly gaining an audience amongst both tastemakers and casual listeners. Amassing two million plays in the short year since he first stepped into the booth, Sid hopes to continue to deliver uncompromised lyricism and storytelling over captivating production.
A combination of retro aesthetics, enduring lyrics and alt-rock grit.
The best music happens when artists refuse to remain stuck in their own comfort zones and creative boxes. Whenever this happens, they are free to give full range to their vision, and they can really come up with something that’s groundbreaking and personable. This is certainly the case here with Tommy Red and his brand new EP release, “I Wanna Be Exploited.”
